- ➤ Laredo residents are encouraged to join the 55th Earth Day celebration this weekend with family-friendly activities such as a sunset guided hike, live music, poetry and environmental talks. The Rio Grande International Study Center will host a press conference at Las Palmas Trail Nature Park from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 12—serving Earth Day conchitas, coffee and water—to kick off the event. - ➤ A Laredo family said they were grateful to be alive after a crash on March 31 along Highway 83 near San Ygnacio that involved an SUV and a van—injuries still affect them and a medical condition may have played a role. KGNS News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ San Antonio police are asking Laredo residents to help find missing teen Lilliana Miller — last seen on April 4 in San Antonio and believed to be using the border transit route — as they urge community members to be extra alert. KGNS News
- ➤ Border Patrol agents stopped a red tractor-trailer at the I-35 checkpoint just after midnight on April 7 and found five people trying to enter the U.S. without permission—they were taken in and are being processed based on their immigration status. KGNS News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, April 9, Melinda Portillo, a physics teacher at United South High School, was surprised in class when she was named Teacher of the Month for April and received a $250 gift card — a basket of treats, a mug and a T-shirt. - ➤ City Manager Joe Neeb is reviewing each department to cut costs and merge services after COVID funding cuts led to reassigning workers—Mayor Trevino said changes are planned to maintain essential services without layoffs.
