CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two teenagers were arrested on April 5 after a Border Patrol agent responded to a human smuggling case when an SUV crashed into several vehicles and one teen allegedly assaulted the agent- both were later taken near Lamar Rd. and Victoria St. KGNS News
- ➤ On April 4, Laredo police arrested 21-year-old Luis Enrique Escalon for cruelty to animals after a call led them to a home on the 800 block of Cortez—where a tied dog died in 100° heat and additional dogs were found in poor conditions. KGNS News
- ➤ A 90-year-old man was assaulted, injured and locked inside his home on the 1000 block of E. Okane St. when his 56-year-old relative, Humberto Cantu, reportedly pushed him and threatened to break windows if help was called—police said he removed the victim’s phone battery and fled before returning—and Cantu was arrested on charges including assault, elder violence, unlawful restraint and terroristic threat. - ➤ Four teens and two adults were arrested after a fight and shots fired Monday near United South High School and United South Middle School — a hearing was held Friday at the Webb County Youth Village where County Attorney Marco Montemayor recommended the teens remain in custody. KGNS News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On April 10, TAMIU confirmed a student's SEVIS record ended after the U.S. government revoked his visa—one of roughly 300 revocations affecting many international students. Carlos Carreon, a student from Mexico, said he feels it is unfair because no clear reason was given. KGNS News
- ➤ Yesterday, Congressman Henry Cuellar visited Harmony School of Excellence in Laredo to honor Service Leadership Society students (who helped pass a student-written bill on a Washington trip). He presented them with a special award (recognizing their leadership in community service). KGNS News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ LISD and RGISC partnered on the Adelante con Arboles project to add green space to eight school campuses in Laredo. The initiative invites architects, landscapers, and engineers (deadline April 21 at 5:00 p.m.) to help build sustainable outdoor areas over a three-year period. KGNS News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Laredo Police Department launched its 175th anniversary exhibit at the Webb County Border Heritage Museum on April 11 and it will open to the public Tuesday at 10 a.m. The exhibit highlights pioneering female officers, fallen heroes — and significant cases that shaped the department’s history.
