CRIME NEWS

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge seized 28 packages containing 115.52 pounds of meth on April 14, valued at over $1,000,000—Homeland Security arrested a 65-year-old man driving a 2005 Town and Country Chrysler van in connection with the seizure.  LaredoBuzz
  • A 15-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday, April 16, after leading police on an early morning chase through south Laredo — he now faces charges for evading arrest, reckless driving, and possessing marijuana while police investigate links to stolen cars.  KGNS News
  • Laredo police are searching for a man believed to be involved in two robberies—one at a convenience store on the 2000 block of Santa Ursula and another at a bakery on the 3000 block of Santa Maria.  KGNS News
  • Encinal police chased Rogelio Hernandez on I-35 after he refused a traffic stop and his car stopped following a high-speed pursuit, with officers catching five passengers who tried to flee on foot and handing them to U.S. Border Patrol while Hernandez now faces several charges.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas A&M International University dropped thousands of silver rubber ducks into its campus fountain—at the Acequia Fountain between the nursing and Pellegrino buildings—on Wednesday, April 16 to celebrate record Spring enrollment. Students collected duck-themed prizes and cheered as the festive display brought school pride ahead of final exams.  KGNS News
  • KGNS+, United ISD, and Laredo ISD are teaming up for a prom dress drive on April 22 to collect new or gently used formal clothes for students who cannot afford prom, graduation, or banquet attire. Donations will be accepted at KGNS at 222 Bob Bullock Loop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials said a contractor accidentally hit a water line in the Eastwood subdivision between Clark Blvd. and Lyon St. before 7 p.m. Wednesday and crews arrived quickly—no repair time has been given.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Inmates at the South Laredo processing center said they felt dizzy and faint after experiencing what they believed was a gas leak at the Rio Grande GEO Processing Center — several reported fighting to get outside for fresh air. Laredo officials and the fire department confirmed the issue came from a carbon monoxide build-up due to a water boiler exhaust in a maintenance closet — the problem was promptly fixed, although inmates remain worried it may happen again.  KGNS News
