- ➤ 3-year-old terrier mix Syracuse has been at the Laredo Animal Protective Society for about a year and is now available for adoption after being featured on KGNS’s Pet of the Week — he is fixed, vaccinated, microchipped, and great with kids and other dogs. Adoption events will be held on Saturday, April 26 at H-E-B Plus from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at PetSmart from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, April 27 at Walmart on Zapata Highway from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. KGNS News
- ➤ This morning at Laredo Country Club, the 33rd Annual Administrative Professionals’ Day Fashion Show and Luncheon honored local administrative assistants while raising funds for Border Region Behavioral Health Center. Organized by the Volunteer Services Council, the event supported mental health services (benefiting more than 5,000 clients) (and serving individuals with intellectual disabilities). KGNS News

- ➤ A two-car crash blocked Guadalupe Street near Monterrey Avenue in central Laredo just before 5 p.m. on April 23 — police said drivers should avoid the area as westbound lanes remain closed. KGNS News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Rebeca Guzman-Rios, 39, was sentenced to 10 years for trying to move cocaine after pleading guilty in August 2024, while 65-year-old Rogelio Garcia-Ayala received a five-year sentence; both are expected to be deported after serving their time. KGNS News
- ➤ A 27-year-old man from Mexico living in Laredo was sentenced to two years in federal prison after he hit a Border Patrol agent during a chase on October 14th—he struck the agent in the head and face as he attempted to flee—and he will remain in custody until his transfer to prison before being sent back to Mexico. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Webb County Head Start is facing a threat as federal proposals may cut its funding and possibly end the program by 2026; staff are urging local officials and parents to speak up to protect the service that helps over 1,200 children and employs 300 teachers. Concerns include potential cuts to teacher salaries and the loss of specialized care for children—issues that community members believe could deeply harm the program's future. KGNS News

- ➤ City officials announced Wednesday morning that Maria E. Benavides Park will receive ADA improvements, a new scoreboard, an upgraded public address system, and a renovated concession stand—funded by a Community Development Block Grant and District Priority Funds to boost local youth sports and community events. - ➤ Laredo officials including Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño and Congressman Henry Cuellar met with the International Boundary and Water Commission on a boat tour to inspect river levels and plan dredging—conditional on Mexico fulfilling its treaty obligations. The city will also boost water conservation by redirecting extra water into Lake Casa Blanca—part of its long-term plan to meet growing demand. KGNS News
