ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A car crash occurred at 11:30 a.m. on May 1 at the intersection of Chihuahua and McClelland, and police directed traffic to one lane + no injuries were reported as the investigation continued.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 30, police raided eight liner businesses on Market Street and seized more than 70 gambling machines and nearly $50,000 in cash—two employees were arrested and one woman was handed over to Border Patrol as the investigation continues.  KGNS News
  • During an April 5 traffic stop on I-35 in Laredo, officers detected signs of tampering and a K-9 unit discovered concealed cocaine and heroin — leading to a federal drug trafficking indictment against 36-year-old Albing Pablo Rivera-Leal.  KGNS News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Texas A&M International University’s Sanchez School of Business Texas Center released the second volume of its three-part series on North American trade integration and job vulnerability on May 1, which uses trade-linked employment models to analyze how U.S. tariffs could expose over 4.1 million jobs in Mexico. The report shows that about 2.6 million manufacturing jobs and 1.5 million agricultural and mining jobs are at risk—highlighting the deep economic ties between the region’s workforces.  Texas A&M International University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Cynthia Sosa from TAMIU was appointed president of the TCEA Board of Directors and became the first Latina from South Texas to hold the role—she took office on April 1 and began her duties on April 11. She will lead the board in developing a five-year strategic plan to update policies and expand TCEA’s impact.  Texas A&M International University
  • Texas State University in San Marcos will host the first-ever Alliance for Texas History Conference from May 15 to 17—TAMIU graduate students and alums will give presentations on research covering Laredo’s influenza pandemic, women’s reproductive rights, and shifts in local journalism. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Laredo Economic Development Department and the Laredo Chamber of Commerce will host a proclamation by Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño on May 3 at 6:00 PM during the Cinco de Mayo Pop-Up Vendor Market at the Vietnam Veterans Plaza (1120 E. Calton Road) that starts National Small Business Week from May 4 to 10. Additional events to celebrate local small businesses will be announced later in the week.  LaredoBuzz

HEALTH NEWS

  • AHEC is hosting its 18th Annual Mental Health and Substance Abuse Awareness Symposium today from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at IBC Annex on Jacaman Road in Laredo—registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with free admission for the general public and a $50 fee for those needing continuing education units.  KGNS News
  • The Laredo Stroke Support Group is leading a stroke awareness campaign that includes free support services and outreach events planned for May and June. It will open its Fine Arts Fiesta today at the Laredo Center for the Arts—providing stroke survivors and caregivers with essential resources.  KGNS News
