BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business owners in downtown Laredo worry that poor infrastructure, petty crimes and a rising homeless population are hurting their sales—prompting calls for more police patrols, parking fee waivers and building upkeep rules. They reported that abandoned properties and fewer public amenities have led to less foot traffic compared to past years.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • Laredo police ask local residents to help identify suspects in a suspected assault from April 28 near Bob Bullock Loop & East Clark Boulevard; anyone with tips should contact Crime Stoppers and reference case number 25-0595 to be eligible for up to $1,000.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sandra Valls, a Laredo native, made her Broadway debut as Prima Fulvia in the musical Real Women Have Curves — the show plays at the James Earl Jones Theater until October.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Laredo College held its commencement ceremonies on May 9 — over 1,400 graduates earned their degrees and certificates and the LC Police Department Color Guard made its historic debut — as families and staff cheered the milestone event at the Sames Auto Arena.  LaredoBuzz

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials at City Hall read a proclamation to honor National Hospital Week and salute local healthcare workers. Representatives from local hospitals attended the ceremony — a tribute to the city’s longstanding community care legacy.  KGNS News
  • Webb County law officers were honored Tuesday, May 13 during National Law Enforcement Week when Sheriff Martin Cuellar held an awards ceremony at the 1848 Event Center — awarding Officer of the Year, Deputy of the Year, and Supervisor of the Year along with lifesaving awards.  KGNS News
  • Border Patrol agents returned to work in the field after a temporary processing center on U.S. 83 closed in March because fewer people were crossing the border. Chief Patrol Agent Jesse Munoz said the count has risen to 30 to 35 crossings a day but security measures remain as more agents will be hired.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors Hospital in Laredo will host a free health fair on Thursday, May 15 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. in its main lobby to share stroke warning signs during National Stroke Awareness Month—Dr. Osama Jamil said that anyone noticing symptoms like sudden loss of balance, vision changes, drooping face or arm weakness should go to the hospital immediately.  KGNS News
