  • City officials in Laredo are exploring a plan to turn scrap metal into public art to brighten community spaces; a review board will evaluate possible designs and locations with details to follow soon.  KGNS News

  • Texas A&M International University advanced its Open Bookshelf Initiative to broaden access to a free digital library with multilingual books. Partnering with FEdu, Laredo ISD, Laredo Learns, and local organizations, the project supports literacy and lifelong learning for all ages.  Texas A&M International University
  • Amparo Gutierrez + Matias de Llano elementary schools closed their doors for the final time May 28 as Laredo ISD consolidated operations and reallocated resources for students. District officials said the move marks a significant change in local education.  KGNS News
  • Alexander High School senior Elias Sauceda drove home in a new 2026 Honda HR-V after winning the Drive Sames 4 Education Car Giveaway issued by United ISD just before the first graduation ceremony on Thursday morning in Laredo — he was one of 16 finalists among over 2,500 eligible students.  KGNS News
  • LISD enrollment dropped by 448 students over five years and is forecast to reach nearly 17,800 by 2031. Superintendent Guillermo Pro said the district is cutting costs + renting its performing arts center to keep essential programs for students.  KGNS News
  • Texas A&M International University is hosting summer camps that offer robotics, athletics, and outdoor play for children and teens, with sessions scheduled from June through August at the campus and City of Laredo Tennis Complex (registration info is available from the Office of Continuing and Professional Education).  Texas A&M International University
  • TAMIU School of Engineering hosted its annual APEX Senior Design Showcase on May 28, celebrating innovative projects in energy, environmental systems, healthcare and autonomous systems as faculty + industry judges awarded top honors to three teams.  Texas A&M International University
  • TAMIU’s NSF-funded REU Site offered research opportunities to 10 undergraduates each summer from 2023 to 2025; they focused on wireless sensor networks and convex geometry. Led by Dr. Habib M.   • TAMIU will host summer tennis camps in Laredo for players aged 9 to 17 with two sessions, one from June 1-11 and one from June 15-25, offering beginner, intermediate and advanced classes. Director Jaime Don Juan said the camps will focus on conditioning, development and fun.  KGNS News
  • TAMIU Recreational Sports will host its annual Summer Camp for children (ages 5–13) with two sessions set for June 1–11 and June 15–25; the camp runs Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., with a 7:45 a.m. drop-off and a registration fee of $210 per session with sibling discounts.  Texas A&M International University

  • Graduation ceremonies for UISD are underway at Sames Auto Arena today, with Alexander High School seniors having graduated this morning and United South High School students set to walk the stage at 2 p.m. More ceremonies are scheduled for tomorrow, and seating is first come, first served (tickets required; clear-bag policy enforced).  KGNS News

  • CBP has warned South Texas travelers about a New World Screwworm threat and is using a public awareness campaign to protect livestock and pets. The CBP Laredo Field Office distributed tear sheets in English & Spanish at eight ports of entry and urges reporting of affected animals.  KGNS News
