  • Project Ella running camp will launch tomorrow, June 7 at Haynes Recreation Center in District 3 to empower elementary and middle school students through athletics and creative activities—founder Elvira Gonzalez and Council Member Melissa Cigarroa support the initiative and note that waitlist options are available as camps quickly fill up.  KGNS News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials urged drivers (and pedestrians) to be extra cautious after a fatal accident occurred on June 5th, as changes in road safety practices are being recommended.  KGNS News
  • An 18-year-old in a black Kia Optima struck a man crossing the street at 3 a.m. on June 5 in south Laredo, leading to the man's death and prompting Laredo Police and TxDOT to urge drivers and pedestrians to use crosswalks and wear reflective clothing in dark conditions — a reminder to follow safety rules.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • CBP officers intercepted nearly $5M worth of cocaine hidden in 149 packages in a 2013 trailer at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge on Tuesday, June 3 — the seizure involved about 363 pounds of alleged cocaine and the case has been turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.  KGNS News
  • The Webb County Sheriff’s Office Livestock Division began investigating an animal cruelty case in La Moca subdivision near U.S. Hwy 83 yesterday after five cows were shot—two of which later died.  KGNS News
  • Border Patrol agents said a truck fled a traffic stop near the Rio Grande when the driver sped off and drove into the river—13 individuals exited the vehicle and swam to Mexico while investigators continued their probe.  KGNS News

  • Two UISD teachers were given brand-new cars at the Teachers of the Year Banquet on June 5—an event honoring their hard work in education.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 5, the DEA’s Houston Division held a press conference to launch a new initiative—one that aims to stop the flow of precursor chemicals used in making synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.  KGNS News
