COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On October 4 at Texas A&M International University, the Society of Martha Washington will hold its fourth annual Pink Walk to raise funds for Mercy Clinic Laredo—supporting diagnostic testing and cancer treatment. Organizers said the funds will help cover mastectomies and follow-up chemotherapy for patients in need.  KGNS News

  • Sandra Alaniz—the outgoing president of the Laredo Chamber and only the fourth woman in 110 years to serve—discussed her wins, challenges, and leadership lessons on Morning Brew with Mindy Casso as she hands the gavel to another woman for the first time.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Laredo is gearing up for Halloween with a series of community events scheduled from Oct 3 to Oct 30—featuring festivals like a Harvest event at Border Heritage Museum, a Halloween Car Show at Pep Boys, a wrestling special at Hal’s Restaurant Bar and many family-friendly activities including pet costume contests, cookie decorating and a drive-thru celebration. Residents can join events at various local venues that offer fun experiences for all ages as the city gets ready to celebrate the spooky season.  KGNS News
  • Geysi Lagos, a Laredo mother who has published 18 books, released her latest book on autism to share her journey with her child and help parents understand the spectrum—her work received praise nationally and abroad.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Laredo municipal court judge was sworn in on September 30th after voters approved a charter amendment (the measure updated court procedures) at the municipal courthouse.  KGNS News
  • Rep. Cuellar warned that a potential government shutdown could affect Medicare and Medicaid services, as funds cover Medicaid for the first quarter yet some services may face delays—local healthcare might suffer from funding cuts in underserved areas. He noted a large deficit and impending automatic cuts that would further strain health resources in Laredo.  KGNS News
  • Laredo’s first municipal court judge for position 2—Judge Eduardo “Wayo” Davila Jr.—was sworn in on September 30 after being appointed by the city council nearly a year following a voter-approved charter amendment. He said he will serve with more compassion and noted his position will appear on the ballot in 2028.  KGNS News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Frequent tennis players in Laredo have noticed renovations at the Market Street Tennis Courts as the city works to repair cracked floors that caused unpredictable bounces during tournaments — the project is expected to finish sometime in 2026 amid ongoing repairs. Local resident Filberto Martinez noted that players had complained the court conditions sometimes cost them valuable points.  KGNS News
