COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The City invited residents on Wednesday at 4 p.m. to a special presentation of the book 'Spiderboy' at the Joe Guerra Public Library and is hosting another session today at 4 p.m. in the multipurpose room; children are encouraged to wear superhero costumes—joining a design contest, a talk about the author, and an interactive storytelling session. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ KGNS+ launched its annual 8th Grader of the Month program in partnership with the Laredo Police Department and local sponsors to honor outstanding middle school students. The ceremony held on October 29th awarded medals, certificates, and gift bags to the honorees. KGNS News
- ➤ Alicia Ruiz Elementary’s teacher Christina Iniguez was named Teacher of the Month for October for her compassion and creativity - she received several nominations, including one from a student, and was awarded a $250 gift card, a basket of local goodies, a coffee mug and a T-shirt. KGNS News
- ➤ School officials in Laredo set guidelines for Halloween on a school day; elementary students may wear costumes that are easy to move in and non-violent while Laredo ISD bans costumes for older students and United ISD advises checking campus rules—parents and teachers are urged to enforce these guidelines. - ➤ KGNS+ honored Laredo 8th graders during its ceremony on Oct. 29 at 5:41 p.m.—the event recognized outstanding academic achievements among local students. KGNS News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability plans to revitalize its greenhouse built in 2018 by adding hydroponic containers for soil-free plant growth during intense summer heat—while it secures a three-year grant of about $150K from South Texas Advancement Resource. KGNS News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ El Metro Transit added an extra trip to its Strike Route Time Point Schedules to reduce wait times and improve service—printed schedules are available at the Transit Center as the system operates from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until further notice. KGNS News
- ➤ TxDOT is urging drivers and trick-or-treaters to share the road and be cautious as Halloween nears. The department recommends slowing down and wearing reflective clothing (it says this helps keep everyone safe when visibility is low). KGNS News
- ➤ U.S. Customs and Border Protection reminds travelers that certain plants and fruits used in Día de los Muertos celebrations may be stopped at the Southwest border because they can bring pests and diseases — travelers must declare all agricultural items to avoid fines. LaredoBuzz
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A boil water notice remains in effect in Rio Bravo and El Cenizo—communities affected—as officials work to fix problems with the water supply reported on Oct. 29. Residents must boil water for drinking and cooking until tests show the water is safe. KGNS News
- ➤ A local man discovered he had mild hearing loss after an exam at Laredo Hearing and Balance Solutions and his longtime friend Alexander Soler shared his own experience with hearing aids during National Audiology Awareness Month to encourage yearly hearing tests. KGNS News

- ➤ Officials with LAPS introduced Nana, a one-year-old Basset Hound mix, as Pet of the Week on October 29 at a KGNS studio. Nana is fully vaccinated, spayed, microchipped and dewormed, and she will attend adoption events at Petco and PetSmart on November 1—she hopes to find a loving home. KGNS News
