  • Girl Scout cookie season begins today with classics Thin Mints and Samoas as local scouts start selling cookies to learn new skills (such as building confidence). The program offers hands-on experience that supports personal growth.  KGNS News

FINANCE NEWS

  • Social Security recipients will see their checks increase by 2.8% this month, adding about $56 per month, according to the Social Security Administration. Over 200,000 locals from Webb and Zapata counties will benefit—down from a 3.1% average last year and up from 2.5% in 2025 (TAMIU’s School of Business).  KGNS News

  • The City of Laredo announced that the championship field at Buena Vista Sports Complex will be named after Parks and Recreation Director J.J. Gomez, honored for his community leadership; officials gave his family an award as the complex prepares to open.  KGNS News
  • Laredo’s City Development Department offers three programs that help residents repair homes damaged by fire, flood or mold. Applicants must be legal residents living in their home and may apply for interest-free loans or a Livability Grant up to $15,000 + a waiting list is in effect.  KGNS News
  • A widespread power outage in South Laredo has shut down several traffic signals as AEP crews work to restore power + local authorities monitor the repair efforts.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Laredo Public Health invites residents to join a community garden project starting later this week at a designated city lot. The initiative will foster local wellness and sustainable living (volunteer participation is encouraged).  KGNS News
  • Laredo Public Health offers a weekly mental wellness session today at 10 a.m. at 520 Reynolds St; activities include breathing, meditation, and arts+crafts designed to improve mental fitness as residents work toward their New Year’s goals.  KGNS News
