  • Relay for Life of Webb County received the Southern Region Event of the Year Award during a special ceremony — its first such honor reflecting volunteers' hard work. The event will take place on Friday, April 24 at the United ISD Student Activity Complex.  KGNS News
  • The South Texas Food Bank is expanding its Kid’s Cafe program in partnership with Bethesda Center to serve more local children. Expansion details remain pending and the new site will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting Feb., Laredo College cosmetology department will offer salon services to the public through Apr. (appointments are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.) as students train by providing haircuts, styling and beauty treatments.  KGNS News
  • KGNS+ honored outstanding 8th graders at its monthly recognition event on Wednesday morning. The event, backed by local sponsors and the Laredo Police Department, featured encouraging words from Chief Meteorologist Richard ‘Heatwave’ Berler.  KGNS News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local officials confirmed that buoys will be installed in the Rio Grande this spring to address water safety concerns near Laredo. Details on exact placement and oversight are expected to be shared soon.  KGNS News

  • Northbound drivers on I-35 encountered alternating lane closures near the Mines Rd. flyover as TxDOT conducted emergency repairs yesterday, Jan. 28 (which included the closure of the ramp from W. Del Mar Blvd. and San Dario Ave.), urging motorists to slow and follow directions.  KGNS News
  • SCAN — a nonprofit serving children and adults — opposed a proposal to let tobacco shops serve alcohol during a press conference on Wednesday morning, Jan. 28. The group said the change could risk public health and urged a public workshop for community input.  KGNS News

  • Local leaders pushed for a pediatric intensive care unit in Laredo yesterday, Jan. 28, to improve child health; officials are reviewing the proposal and exploring funding options to bring the plan to fruition.  KGNS News
  • Tonight, the Laredo Chamber of Commerce hosts “Reset, Renew, Thrive: Your 2026 Wellness Journey” where community health leaders led by Dr. Julie Bazan share actionable strategies for improving body and mind.   • Laredo celebrates the grand opening of Buena Vista Sports Complex today.
