- ➤ The Roman Catholic Diocese of Laredo is planning a series of events to celebrate 25 years of service, starting with a pilgrimage on March 22 and ending with an anniversary mass on August 9. Bishop James Tamayo and event organizer Mercurio Martinez III said the celebrations will include processions, a luncheon, and a gala to mark the milestone. KGNS News
- ➤ Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas are celebrating National Girl Scout Week and recruiting girls from kindergarten through 12th grade at community events and school visits. - ➤ Captain Anabelle Venegas, who moved from Hebbronville, became Laredo’s first female firefighter when she began duties in 1981 after a chance visit to a local fire station; she faced bias and difficult challenges during her 36-year career (retiring in 2012) and helped open doors for more women as six now serve and three are training at the fire academy as of 2025. - ➤ Laredo police, Texas Rangers and the Webb County DA indicted 42-year-old Sergio Mendez in connection to the 2016 murder of Janette Escamilla Jaramillo after DNA evidence linked him to the case — the victim's family now finds hope for justice. KGNS News
- ➤ Troopers chased a suspect linked to human smuggling on Wednesday afternoon, March 12, near U.S. 59 and Loop 20 after seeing him drop off suspected undocumented migrants at a gas station; he now faces charges of human smuggling, evading arrest, and reckless driving—DPS noted that such chases have become rare, falling from 38 in February 2024 to just four in February 2025. - ➤ U.S. Senator Ted Cruz spoke with KGNS after meeting with Laredo officials on March 12 and discussed plans for a new 4/5 bridge, trade improvements and border security that could create thousands of jobs once construction begins—he added that changes in tariffs may help ease border crossings.
