COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Laredo-Webb County will host its Golfing for Roofs Tournament on April 12 at 7:30 a.m. at Casa Blanca Golf Course — about 140 golfers in teams of three will vie for a $2400 prize while a $150 entry fee will help fund affordable housing for low-income families.  KGNS News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Images show the aftermath of a grass fire that destroyed a home on the 2500 block of Geronimo Loop in West Laredo on March 14 as high winds and low humidity spread the flames after a palm tree ignited—no injuries were reported and the fire remains under investigation.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • Border Patrol agents and Laredo Police responded to a call from a concerned citizen and stopped an alleged human smuggling attempt involving a tractor-trailer—arresting eight undocumented immigrants and charging them with illegal entry.  KGNS News
  • Two men, Felipe Torres and Armando Ortega, were found guilty on March 18 for their roles in a deadly human smuggling case from June 2022—one that killed 48 migrants and left 16 badly hurt—with five dying later at a hospital when a truck in San Antonio was stopped.  KGNS News
  • DPS troopers intercepted a human smuggling attempt on I-35 near Exit 2 when three individuals tried to escape—detaining a driver and one migrant who was later transferred to U.S. Border Patrol while officials questioned the driver.  KGNS News
  • Laredo police arrested 29-year-old Jose Herminio Martinez on Tuesday for starting multiple fires—including one near Laredo College that led to an evacuation at Fort McIntosh—and charged him with arson.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Katherine Miller, a teacher at Amparo Gutierrez Elementary, was honored as Teacher of the Month for her 30 years of service—24 of which she spent teaching students with dyslexia. She received a $250 gift card— a basket of goodies— a coffee mug— and a commemorative T-shirt for her work in helping students overcome reading challenges.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Cuellar said border patrol agents in Laredo still face tough security challenges even though illegal crossings dropped 71.3% in the first two months of 2025—agents report broken cameras and delays with the River Road Project that hinder safe patrols. He added that funding issues and local delays have stalled repairs and new equipment, leaving agents in need of better surveillance and more reliable access along the border.  KGNS News
  • Customs and Border Protection awarded Granite Construction Company a contract worth over $70 million to build seven miles of new border wall in Hidalgo County, Rio Grande Valley — the project is funded by CBP’s 2021 fiscal year budget.  KGNS News
