COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday morning, leaders from the Webb County Domestic Violence Coalition met in Laredo and reaffirmed their pledge to combat domestic violence amid growing community concerns. They stressed the need for coordinated agency efforts to support survivors and planned ongoing strategies (including increased outreach and awareness programs) as part of their 29-year advocacy. - ➤ Eli, an 11-month-old dog at the Laredo Animal Protective Society, is looking for a family—he loves affection, does well with kids and other pets, and has an $80 adoption fee that covers his shots, microchip and surgery. The shelter is also hosting a 5K Run/Walk at North Central Park on March 22 to help raise funds for animal care. KGNS News

- ➤ Laredo Police are asking for help finding 16-year-old Alejandro Chavarria, a missing juvenile with black and red hair, brown eyes, standing between 5′7″ and 5′8″, weighing 160 pounds, and with a scar above his right eyebrow; anyone with information should call (956) 795-2800. KGNS News
- ➤ A woman was arrested Tuesday morning on the 1200 block of Hidalgo Street at 10:28 a.m.—she attacked a restaurant owner, refused to pay for her food, and is charged with robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia. KGNS News
- ➤ Two men were found guilty in San Antonio for their roles in what experts called the deadliest human smuggling operation in U.S. history after authorities discovered a container with bodies and survivors in June 2022—sentencing is planned for June on the third anniversary—and a tractor-trailer in the case passed through Laredo. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Representative Caroline Fairly from Amarillo proposed House Bill 1481 to ban cellphones for K-12 students during school hours in public schools. The bill is now under review by the education committee and would take effect in the fall if passed — it also lets districts set rules for extracurricular use. KGNS News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews began a $2 million street improvement project in Rio Bravo on March 14 by leveling manholes on Centeno Ln.—Renoworks is managing the first phase. The work will continue on busy streets like Paseo del Tiber Rd.—County officials expect repairs to finish by June. KGNS News
- ➤ Laredo City Council approved bond referendum projects worth $417,050,000 after 32 years to boost public safety, public health, street improvements, and senior housing. The bond election will be held May 3 with early voting from April 22 to April 29, and residents can attend informational sessions on March 25 at the Jose A.
