BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Texas A&M International University’s A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business announced the formation of an advisory council for its Texas Center for Border Economic and Enterprise Development, which held its first meeting on March 21 in the De la Chica Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library. The council’s members from banking, customs brokerage, logistics and transportation will guide efforts to boost cross-border trade and enhance research. Texas A&M International University
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Five Laredoans were sentenced for running a smuggling operation that tried to avoid an I-35 checkpoint by moving 12 people in three cars—leader Jaquon Davis pleaded guilty on Oct. 10 and received 44 months in federal prison while the others got 21, 37, six, and 33 months in prison. KGNS News
- ➤ Laredo police worked hard during spring break by issuing 471 citations and making 13 arrests between March 7 and March 24 on the TxDOT-funded Impaired Driver Mobilization Grant—officials stress that drivers use a designated driver to keep roads safe. KGNS News
- ➤ A Mexican cartel leader, Noe Gonzalez Martinez, was sentenced to life in federal prison after a one-hour trial in December 2023 — authorities said that Laredo Police and federal agencies worked together to break a cross-border plot involving murder-for-hire and kidnapping. KGNS News
- ➤ The Laredo Police Department warned consumers after a buyer discovered a vehicle purchased in cash from Facebook Marketplace was stolen during a title inspection on March 26—investigators said buyers should visit the Tax Assessor Collector’s Office with the seller to verify the title. KGNS News
- ➤ On March 26, a human rights committee announced that a federal judge sentenced four military members, accused two years ago of firing at a pickup truck that killed five people in Nuevo Laredo, to 40 years in prison. KGNS News

- ➤ Laredo College and TAMIU hosted a TAMIU Open House at LC on March 27 to help students learn about transfer options and meet with officials from admissions, financial aid, and other departments + the schools also teamed up on March 22 for The Big Event where over 500 students helped with community service projects. - ➤ Texas A&M International University has named a 14-member committee to launch a national search for a new president after Pablo Arenaz—this committee with members from campus and the local community will deliver at least three candidates to the chancellor and regents. - ➤ TAMIU’s Public Relations office earned 10 awards at the national 40th Annual Educational Advertising Awards from over 2,000 entries from more than 1,000 schools — the team won gold, silver, and merit awards in several categories. The recognition affirms their strong creativity and teamwork as they share the university’s story. Texas A&M International University

- ➤ AHEC is offering two free workshops to help Laredo teens make confident and healthy choices. The 'Draw the Line, Respect the Line' workshop is for middle school students (6th-8th grade) while the 'Seventeen Days' workshop is for young women (15-19) learning about healthy relationships.
