- ➤ Laredo firefighters held the Fill the Boot fundraiser on March 28 to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and will collect donations on April 4 and April 11 at busy intersections— the funds will pay for care, support, and research for people with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and similar diseases. - ➤ The City of Laredo and Health Department are hosting a Disability Awareness event today—held at the Freddie Benavides Sports Complex on 2603 South Malinche Avenue—that includes a ceremony, a Down Syndrome Awareness Walk, and games, activities and prizes for families. - ➤ Jesus Hernandez-Gerrera (an undocumented migrant with prior removals) admitted to unlawful re-entry and human smuggling charges after he led a high-speed chase in his Ford Expedition that ended when he crashed into two vehicles on Santa Maria Ave. KGNS News
- ➤ A former Customs and Border Protection officer—Emanuel Isac Celdon—was sentenced to nearly 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty in March last year to smuggling people through Bridge 2 and accepting cartel bribes that helped let what he believed was cocaine cross from Mexico, and he was fined almost $18,000. - ➤ On March 28, over 260 Texas National Guard soldiers were deputized under Title 8 to arrest migrants at the border—more troops are expected to arrive in Laredo to train with Border Patrol agents. KGNS News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Seven people died by suicide in Laredo as of Friday, March 28, and the Suicide Prevention Committee has raised awareness by sharing support details like the 988 hotline. The group meets every last Friday at the corner of McPherson and Del Mar to offer guidance and report that (over 690 individuals have been picked up in emergencies) to get needed help. KGNS News
