COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Laredo in partnership with Catholic Charities is offering free VITA tax filing services at two locations from April 7 to April 11. Taxpayers should bring required documents such as W-2 forms, retirement records, and self-employment forms (or an ITIN if they do not have a Social Security number) to file their taxes on time and avoid penalties.  KGNS News
  • Residents in District 3 should have bulky trash set out on the sidewalk without blocking walkways today as crews start at 7 a.m.—the next pickup will be in District 7 on April 17.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • Daniel Palomo Jr. pleaded guilty Monday morning to assaults from a 2018 gas station attack and a December 2024 house party incident, and he received a sentence of five years probation plus orders to attend drug and alcohol classes, anger management, community service, and pay restitution to the victims.  KGNS News
  • On April 5th, Laredo Police responded to shots fired in the 9500 block of Allen Dr where they found Juan Esteban Galindo dead and Jorge Luis Gomez in critical condition—authorities said suspect Jose Manuel Gomez-Robledo fled to Mexico and faces charges of murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.  KGNS News
  • Police said 42-year-old Arturo Limon II was found guilty after he stole cash from a bank using an empty backpack and tried to buy a gun—he was arrested at his home and remains in jail pending sentencing.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Laredo College will host its Spring '25 Job Fair on April 10 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Maravillo Gym to connect job seekers with over 40 local employers — including Concentrix, Gateway Community and Laredo Rehabilitation Hospital. Workforce Development Coordinator Miguel Flores also offered tips on what to bring to help attendees prepare for the event.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, April 7, the Laredo City Council met at City Hall chambers at 5:30 p.m. and discussed working with the state to use land near the Colombia International Bridge for a new border fence—Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño said this local plan offered more flexibility than federal options.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Laredo Public Health Department launched a 12-week Lifestyle Medicine Challenge to support physical activity, mental health and professional guidance. Laredo resident Gretel Vital visited a booth and said she applied for the Women-Infants and Children program while planning to join additional health programs.  KGNS News
