  • At the 29th annual Western Hemispheric Trade Conference at Texas A&M International University, students, business leaders and experts talked about world business trends and new technology while professor Francisco Lopez-Vazquez urged students to study harder. CRIME NEWS

  • A Mexican national was arrested in Laredo on April 4th when a DPS trooper stopped his silver 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche for a traffic violation and found 15 plastic-wrapped bundles containing over $205,000 worth of cocaine and black tar heroin hidden under a floorboard compartment—he now faces charges of felony possession of a controlled substance.  KGNS News

  • Texas A&M International University will present Cine de la Frontera, a graduate student-led film screening exploring border culture and storytelling on May 12 at 6 p.m. at the Alamo Drafthouse. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Texas A&M International University held its 29th Western Hemispheric Trade Conference with 25 sessions on topics like cryptocurrency + artificial intelligence's financial effects that brought together students, professors and business experts from Laredo and Tamaulipas. The event will continue today with sessions on employment, knowledge management and security interventions.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TAMIU will host a Criminal Justice Career Expo on April 22 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Western Hemispheric Trade Center Building, where over 25 agencies will offer job and internship opportunities through workshops, panel discussions and networking events.  Texas A&M International University
  • TAMIU will host Undergraduate Research Day Wednesday, April 16 at 3:30 p.m. in the Western Hemispheric Trade Center lobby — students will present research projects on topics from fungal infections to computer-driven studies.  Texas A&M International University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Laredo clarified that its bond election will proceed as planned on May 3 — ballots have already been mailed despite public confusion over Webb County Elections Administrator Jose Luis Castillo's comments. The statement explained that Texas law allows cancellation only in very limited cases and confirmed that this municipal vote cannot be canceled.  KGNS News
  • The Webb County Sheriff’s Office honored 9-1-1 dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week for their fast work in emergency calls. Maria Dora Ibarra recalled a Rio Bravo call where a distraught woman received help — showing how essential these dispatchers are in keeping people safe.  KGNS News
  • The City of Laredo approved a 1,600-foot lease near the Colombia Solidarity Bridge as part of a 3-mile state-led border barrier project to keep local control over emergency access and drainage. City Manager Joe Neeb said the move was made to stay involved in construction decisions—this does not signal support for a border wall.  KGNS News
