COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Renovations to 1848 Event Center in Laredo will use $4.6 million to upgrade the pavilion, restaurant area, and restrooms. On April 14, county leaders and Slay Architects presented detailed plans and the county will soon seek bids—officials say the changes were long awaited while the completion date remains unknown.  KGNS News
  • St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Laredo is preparing for its 50th anniversary celebration on May 25 and is asking parishioners to bring old photos and items from its early days — including from the time when services were held at a nearby chapel. The church, which has served more than 2,200 families since opening in 1975, will scan submissions and return all original photos before the gala and historical displays.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in South Laredo grew concerned after the FBI & Laredo Police executed search warrants on the 3500 block of Sinaola Dr. on April 11, discovering drugs, weapons and cash and arresting 23 year old Armando Solis Jr. and 17 year old Abel Solis while additional evidence was found on the 1400 block of Hazelnut Drive and a fight broke out on Sinaloa Dr.  KGNS News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Laredo dropped to $2.58 per gallon today from $2.74 last week—providing a slight relief as grocery and essential costs continue to rise. It remains unclear how long the lower rate will last.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 12th, Laredo College’s South Campus hosted its annual car show where cars, trucks, and motorcycles gathered to raise funds for student scholarships. Student groups sold food and drinks and participants competed for trophies in 28 categories to support local education.  KGNS News

FINANCE NEWS

  • Many Laredos, including Juan Araiza, have not filed their taxes even though returns have been accepted since late January and are now racing to meet the IRS deadline today. Taxpayers who mail their forms must do so by 5 p.m. and those owing money will face interest and fees—this year is the final time that paper returns are accepted.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The local Veterans Conference will run from May 20 to May 22 at the Border Patrol Union Hall behind the Sames Auto Arena, where veterans, law officers, and first responders can learn about mental health, medical care, and education benefits—CBP Officer Arturo Millan and Border Patrol Agent Jaime Olmos provided details about the event. Two sessions will be held each day so attendees can choose the time that best fits their schedule.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Parkinson’s Support Group in Laredo has grown from six members in early 2023 to 35-40 participants each month—meeting at the Laredo Rehabilitation Hospital every last Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.—and recently held a spring symposium where a guest doctor discussed a new infusion treatment while the group launched walking and boxing programs to support residents and their caregivers.  KGNS News
