CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Leonardo Zuniga-Sanchez, 47, who had been deported 10 times, was arrested in Zapata County on Thursday morning at a residence on the 1000 block of Juarez Avenue—part of a multi-agency operation including the Texas Rangers, Border Patrol and Highway Patrol—in connection with an ongoing child sexual abuse investigation. - ➤ Laredo Police recovered six of nine stolen vehicles after an investigation began on Mercury Drive near Mile Marker 13 following a report of a GMC Sierra with the keys left inside, while the other vehicles crossed into Mexico and one person was arrested with further arrests expected as officers warn the public to stay alert. - ➤ At select Laredo elementary schools in the Mines Road area, sensory walls were officially implemented this month to help students manage emotions and stay focused in class + the project had been in the works for nearly two years. Walls are now in use at Muller, Fasken, and Finley Elementary Schools + giving students a space to regroup. KGNS News
- ➤ Texas A&M International University set a record for Spring enrollment with 8,254 students—a 3.95% increase in headcount and a 5.17% rise in credit hours—and celebrated the milestone on April 17 during the 'Release the Quacken' event when students collected commemorative silver ducks around campus. University officials credit expanded support services for the historic gains as they prepare for the 55th anniversary this Fall. Texas A&M International University
- ➤ TAMIU College of Arts and Sciences will host a free lecture by Dr. William Kiser on Wednesday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in room 111 of the Western Hemispheric Trade Center—he will discuss his new book, The Business of Killing Indians: Scalp Warfare and the Violent Conquest of North America, which examines how local leaders handled conflicts on the American frontier. - ➤ TAMIU will partner with Schneider Electric to host an Earth Day Fair on campus Tuesday, April 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will include a symbolic lights-out observance — where students will power down devices — solar smoothie tastings, green pledges, and a tree adoption initiative to promote environmental stewardship.
