COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City officials met Tuesday morning to highlight HUD programs that have added 57 affordable housing units and helped 64 households stay in their homes while Congress reviews future funding. The City will host a Housing Fair Friday, April 25, at Municipal Housing—5511 Thomas Ave.—to provide more details on available housing support.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • Border Patrol released new photos of a chase that ended along the banks of the Rio Grande, where agents aided by the Texas National Guard caught five people who entered without papers—a driver was taken by the Texas Department of Public Safety and all now face charges and will be sent back.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Miss Laredo USA Meghan Jackson and Miss Laredo Teen USA Niali Mahtani are preparing for the Miss Texas competition in Houston while training in nutrition, stage presence, and public speaking. The two are working with local events—gaining support and building confidence—to proudly represent Laredo.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Texas Senate is expected to give final approval to Senate Bill 2, which will let families use part of a $1 billion fund for private school tuition—up to $10,000 or $30,000 for students with disabilities—and then send the bill to Governor Abbott for his signature. Local educators say the measure could reduce funds for public schools.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Laredo confirmed that the May 3 bond election will proceed as scheduled—ballots have already been mailed—and state law prevents canceling the election once it is ordered by the City Council.  LaredoBuzz
  • On April 15, Mexican citizen Sergio Gabriel Lopez Silva and a permanent resident were detained by the National Guard at the Laredo bridge at 5:30 a.m. when officials questioned the status of their Colorado pickup truck (a nationalized Mexican car), and they crossed into Mexico on April 16 while remaining confused about the detour.  KGNS News
  • City of Laredo clarified its approval of a 1,600-foot lease easement near the Colombia Solidarity Bridge does not support a border wall but secures local oversight on emergency access and nearby development. The move is part of a state project covering three miles of land and will allow officials to protect key assets such as the downtown riverfront and a municipal golf course.  LaredoBuzz
  • The Webb County Elections Office reported 817 early votes for the Laredo bond referendum as of April 22, with 812 from in-person voting and five from mail ballots. High-turnout sites include the Laredo Fire Department with 360 votes and the Billy Hall Administrative Building with 119 votes—details confirmed by election officials.  KGNS News
  • Laredo residents cast early ballots on Tuesday, April 22 for a $417 million bond referendum covering public safety, public health, street repairs, and senior housing—Webb County Elections Administrator Jose Luis Castillo expects over 10,000 voters to use nine early voting sites from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with 40 polling locations scheduled for Election Day on May 3.  KGNS News
  • Laredo held early voting on April 22 for its first bond election in 32 years that funds over $417 million for city projects with nine polling sites open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and local officials hope the turnout will exceed 10,000 voters on May 3.
