COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in the Azteca neighborhood celebrated the start of a $2 million project to clean and fix trails in the Las Palmas area; Congressman Henry Cuellar gave a congressional award and local leader Leslie Montemayor said they want the area better for families. Many residents joined cleanup events to remove trash and invasive plants—restoring trails for community use.  KGNS News

  • Dr. Daniel Covarrubias from TAMIU spoke at the North Capital Meridian Diplomacy Forum in Washington, D.C. on April 23, where he joined a panel that discussed how technology—like AI and blockchain—can improve border security and trade efficiency for the region.  Texas A&M International University

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 23, Webb County jail staff booked 38-year-old Noe Armando Garcia for making threats and stealing property and found 90 strips of suboxone during intake+ he now faces a felony drug charge+ he remains in custody awaiting a judge.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Gallery will host the two-person art exhibit Riddles of the Ground on Tuesday, April 29 with an opening reception from 5–7 p.m.—the exhibition by Sandra Amoabeng and Emily Rice will remain on display until May 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.  Texas A&M International University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ten TAMIU undergraduate chemistry and biology students attended the American Chemical Society Spring meeting in San Diego on April 24th, where seven students showed research and six gave oral presentations that led to a student award. The group was led by professors and supported by LSAMP (Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation).  Texas A&M International University
  • TAMIU’s Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 296 welcomed 50 new members during in-person and virtual ceremonies held in the Student Center with chapter president Dr. Ruby Ynalvez leading the event - interim president Juan J. Castillo addressed the audience on the honor society’s longstanding tradition.  Texas A&M International University

HEALTH NEWS

  • Laredo police said that 10 suicides have been reported since January plus nearly 700 emergency crisis calls were received last month, prompting mental health advocates to urge the community to talk openly and check on loved ones. A 9-8-8 Awareness Rally will be held today from 11:30 a.m. to noon to highlight local support resources.  KGNS News

SPORTS NEWS

  • TAMIU Esports student-athletes are in Orlando for the 2025 Grand Finals LAN tournament for the National Association of College Esports, which began April 24 and will run through April 27 — they are competing in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The Top 8 seeded team, including Angel Galván, Joshua García, Abdiel Meléndez, and Diego Torres, will face top-seeded St. Clair Saints on April 26 — marking their first round match.  Texas A&M International University
