- ➤ The Matthews siblings have earned more than 4,600 hours of community service in Laredo by helping veterans, the homeless and the elderly. They began volunteering in middle school through the Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC. KGNS News
- ➤ Today Laredo Animal Care Services in partnership with Miss Southwest USA is hosting Laredo’s Next Top Pet: Rescue from the Runway at the LACS Building at 5202 Maher Ave from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.—rescue animals will walk the runway as local vendors and door prizes add fun to this pet adoption event. - ➤ Casa Karinyo, along with United ISD board member Michelle Molina and Councilmember Ruben Gutierrez, is hosting the Rockin’ the Spectrum Music Festival today from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Bartlett Soccer Complex — the event will raise autism awareness and collect donations to fund a sensory room. - ➤ Students from Alexander, LBJ, and United South High Schools connected online with award-winning author Rex Ogle during Teen Literature Day to discuss his book Abuela, Don't Forget Me. - ➤ Yesterday, Congressman Henry Cuellar and Mayor Victor Treviño held a press conference at City Hall to detail the next step for expanding the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge. They noted the U.S. Department of State sent a letter to the White House to support the project — the final step before presidential approval — which will boost trade, ease traffic and support local jobs. - ➤ Early voting in the City bond election saw a higher turnout on April 25 when more than 1,000 in-person ballots were cast to bring the total to 3,689. Voting will continue until April 29 and Election Day is set for May 3. KGNS News
- ➤ Rep. Cuellar said the permit for expanding the Columbia Solidarity Bridge (Bridge Three) is in review with a decision expected within 60 days — the project will add two new commercial spans to ease heavy traffic. Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino noted that the expansion will create new job opportunities — additional staff will be hired to manage the increased vehicle flow at the border. KGNS News
- ➤ Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 14 that creates the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office—known as DOGE—to make state government more efficient and less costly, while Congressman Henry Cuellar warned against cutting essential services. Lawmakers say the new agency will save taxpayer dollars without reducing core help for people in our community. KGNS News
