- ➤ We Got Your Back, a youth-led nonprofit, has helped asylum seekers at local NGOs in Laredo through supply drives that supported over 3,000 immigrants and 500 families. The group, founded by three Alexander High School cousins (Isabella Ramirez, Renata Gonzalez de Anda, and Matilda Gonzalez de Anda), plans to involve more students (by organizing food kit drives) to extend its mission. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On April 29, FBI agents and other law enforcement officials swarmed a home on Marcella Ave. and Peach Ln. where an ambulance responded, and officials have not confirmed a reason for their visit. KGNS News
- ➤ Troopers and Border Patrol worked together on April 12 near The Outlet Shoppes on Pedregal St. after a vehicle refused to stop and two individuals jumped into the river, and 17-year-old Jason Alejandro Espinoza along with three others were arrested at the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge—facing charges related to human smuggling. - ➤ The City of Laredo is hiring lifeguards for summer work and invites experienced swimmers to apply by passing a mandatory American Red Cross swim test that includes retrieving a 10 lb brick from the deep end. Successful applicants will enroll in a lifeguard class covering CPR, water rescues, and emergency action plans & lifesaving techniques. KGNS News
- ➤ Webb County Commissioners Court met on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at the courthouse+ discussing a plan to form a Recreation Master Planning Committee for a ten-year plan, review an Elections Department proposal for a new server to secure voter registration data, and consider a Tax Office presentation from Hamer Enterprises+ officials said additional agenda items were also on the docket. - ➤ Former councilmember Alfonso (Poncho) Casso filed a petition in Webb County District Court two days after the bond election began, alleging that the city used improper advocacy by downplaying tax impacts in its messaging. City Attorney Doanh (Zone) Nguyen said the city is prepared and has set a hearing for May 2 to address the claims. KGNS News
