- ➤ Officials from Laredo and Nuevo Laredo gathered in City Hall on Friday, May 2 to celebrate Binational Sports Week, emphasizing sports ties between the two communities. Laredo’s mayor Dr. Victor Trevino said the event reinforces binational collaboration + Mexican Consulate representatives also attended. KGNS News
- ➤ The Laredo Boys and Girls Club will launch its 2025 Summer Program on June 2, offering fun learning experiences for children ages six to 12 every Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a $10 membership fee. The program will include STEAM activities, adventure events, and an award-winning astronaut camp—partnering with TAMIU that ends with a visit to a planetarium. KGNS News

- ➤ A federal judge denied Rep. Henry Cuellar’s request to move his criminal trial from Houston to Laredo, citing logistical issues and concerns about an impartial jury — his legal team had argued that holding the trial at home would reduce travel costs and keep key witnesses nearby — and his attorney confirmed the ruling on May 2. - ➤ Laredo police arrested a man aged 36 after a woman was found shot in her hand and without clothes near a downtown park; officers said a 911 call reported an argument during which the suspect locked her inside a home and a struggle over his gun caused it to fire, leaving her with non–life-threatening injuries. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Texas A&M International University expanded its on-campus Dusty’s Food Pantry through a partnership with the South Texas Food Bank and support from the TAMIU Alumni Association—since launching in Fall 2023, the pantry served 1,010 households and 1,236 visits—and now uses commercial-grade refrigeration to store perishable foods safely. - ➤ Laredo College and Texas A&M International University signed a Memorandum of Agreement — they will partner to co-host The Big Event, an annual community service day that lets students earn and share community service hours. The agreement also paves the way for future joint projects that will expand service opportunities for students. Texas A&M International University
- ➤ Texas A&M International University’s Dusty's Food Pantry has partnered with the South Texas Food Bank since Fall 2023 to help more students after serving them since 2017—this partnership has supported over 1,000 households with more than 1,200 visits and enabled the purchase of refrigerators and freezers to store fresh food. - ➤ On May 2, a ceremony at Fire Station 8 on Del Mar Blvd honored 400 firefighters—remembering fallen heroes and recognizing those who excel in service. The Laredo Fire Department also conducted a biannual entrance exam to recruit new candidates. KGNS News
