COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City leaders and families gathered in Laredo on May 6 for the groundbreaking of Phase 2 of North Central Park’s Inclusive Playground—adding soft turf, shade, play areas for children with disabilities and quiet spots. The project is funded by the 2024 city bond and built by Slay Architecture and Zertuche Construction—part of a broader plan to enhance local parks for all families.  KGNS News
  • Voz de Niños trains local volunteers who meet with court-involved children each month with a caregiver present—helping kids feel safe and share concerns with judges. The program now supports 81 of the 300 children in Webb County and seeks more volunteers to join the effort.  KGNS News
  • On May 10, the National Association of Letter Carriers will launch Stamp Out Hunger, asking Laredo residents to put canned food in their mailboxes or drop off non-perishable items at any post office so letter carriers can deliver them to the Laredo Regional Food Bank + South Texas Food Bank.  KGNS News
  • Santiago Cardenas, a 13-year-old Laredo student battling brain cancer, flew from Laredo International Airport on May 6 to Washington, D.C. to serve as 'Congressman for a Day'—he was honored by Congressman Henry Cuellar and supported by his family and community.  KGNS News
  • On Tuesday, May 6, Grupo Amor hosted a spa day for Laredo moms by offering free haircuts, facials and manicures—an effort to thank mothers before Mother's Day on May 11.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a wanted kidnapping suspect as they intercepted a vehicle in a human smuggling operation on May 6th—agents took into custody the driver with an active warrant and three undocumented migrants.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • United ISD held a special proclamation on Tuesday morning with Webb County officials — emphasizing mental health support — and offered resources like licensed counselors, telehealth services and nonprofit collaborations for students, staff and families. The district also stressed classroom strategies to build coping and intervention skills.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Laredo City Council decided to let the Utilities Department manage the search for a secondary water source instead of forming a new committee—councilmember Melissa Cigarroa said the change will ensure regular updates and steady progress on plans for a permanent supply.  KGNS News
