- ➤ 13-year-old Santiago Cardenas from Laredo ISD, who has been fighting a brain tumor for a year, received a warm send-off at Laredo International Airport on May 6 before flying to Washington, D.C. where Congressman Henry Cuellar invited him to serve as a congressional leader for a day — his trip includes visits to monuments and museums — with an additional $500 from Smiles From Heaven to buy souvenirs. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, May 6 at 9 p.m., a big rig hauling a shipping container hit the I-35 overpass near Del Mar Boulevard in Laredo and caused the container to slide off and get stuck below as officers directed traffic while crews later lifted it back onto the truck with no injuries reported. KGNS News
- ➤ The Laredo Police Department reported that one of its patrol units was involved in an accident on May 7 at the intersection of Matamoros Street and San Dario Avenue—both the officer and the driver in the other vehicle were hospitalized in stable condition. KGNS News
- ➤ The NTSB released a six‐page preliminary report on a plane fire during an emergency landing at the WBCA Stars and Stripes Air Show Spectacular in Laredo—identifying factors such as the plane’s altitude, speed and landing angle—and said investigators will continue questioning the pilot. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police arrested 28-year-old Lester David Leyva (the father) after a baby (10-month-old) was found alone on a sidewalk near the 1100 block of Valladolid Avenue in south Laredo on May 6; officers checked the baby for injuries and later returned the child to his mother while child protective services was notified. - ➤ On Wednesday, the City of Laredo and the Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau announced the new Laredo Taco Trail initiative—details were revealed at a special event at the Border Heritage Museum to highlight local taco spots and boost culinary tourism. This effort will support local restaurants and invite both residents and visitors to explore Laredo’s famous food scene. KGNS News
