- ➤ The City of Laredo is celebrating its 270th birthday on Saturday, May 17 with downtown events that include live music, juice and smoothie demos, a birthday pop-up market, and an art exhibit running through June 1. Local groups including Laredo Main Street + Webb County Heritage Foundation organized free celebrations at venues like the Outlet Shoppes, Casa Ortiz, and the Laredo Center for the Arts. KGNS News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Three teens were arrested after allegedly stealing a car and leading police on a chase that ended with a crash at a busy intersection on May 14 — driver Rausel Andrei Fonseca Jr. and passengers Jesse Ramiro Gonzalez and Derek Ethan Coreas were charged with car theft, running from police in a vehicle and on foot. - ➤ Late Wednesday night, agents chased a vehicle near Patrick Henry Drive—Gilman Road in South Laredo that crashed, leading to four detentions after a gun, drugs, and ammunition were found, with officials saying two are believed to be in the country illegally and the others are suspected human smugglers. - ➤ Border Patrol agents from the Laredo Sector arrested Mexican national Eugenio De La Torre-Delgado—an admitted member of the Paisas gang—and he will face felony re-entry charges under 8 USC 1326. KGNS News
- ➤ Former DEA agent James Kuykendall—a Laredo native and close friend of slain agent Kiki Camarena—said he was relieved when Rafael Caro Quintero, accused of orchestrating the 1985 murder, was extradited on February 27; his next court appearance is scheduled for June. KGNS News

- ➤ TAMIU’s A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business and its Texas Center for Border Economic and Enterprise Development released a proposal to create a North American Industrial Coordination Council — a plan to align industrial strategies in the United States, México, and Canada — that sets out five divisions and calls for action during the 2026 USMCA review process. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A donation of $18,000 from Casa Karinyo will help United High School build a sensory room after funds were raised at the Rockin’ the Spectrum concert in April—focused on autism awareness. The room will provide a quiet space where students can learn about textures and sounds when they need a break. KGNS News
- ➤ TAMIU is offering a variety of summer camps for kids from kinder to college — including Dusty's Jr. University Summer Camp where young children learn with university teachers and free camps in 3D design, math, life science, and pre-freshman engineering — with sessions starting on June 2 and continuing through August, all coordinated by the TAMIU Office of Continuing Education. - ➤ Texas A&M International University earned both the Research College and Opportunity College designations during its spring commencement, joining only 33 schools in the nation. - ➤ The Laredo Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety are launching the 'Click It or Ticket' campaign on Monday, May 19 through Sunday, June 1 to boost seat belt use—aiming to reduce traffic-related deaths. Increased patrols will target drivers and passengers not buckled up—noncompliance may cost up to $250. KGNS News
