- ➤ Today, Laredo celebrates its 270th birthday with an all-day event organized by the Webb County Heritage Foundation; festivities begin at 10 a.m. in San Agustin Plaza with musical performances by the Laredo Philharmonic and a mariachi band from Martin High School—over 30 vendors will host pop-up events including a farmers market and history presentation. - ➤ On May 16, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies gathered at Elias Herrera Middle School for the annual K-9 Narcotic Competition where 12 handler and K-9 teams tested their skills detecting hidden narcotics. Cesar Medina from CBP took first place — while two Laredo Police officers earned second and third — as teams navigated a challenge course designed to highlight their training. KGNS News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 31 people during a one-day worksite operation at one business and two job sites in Laredo—several of those arrested had prior criminal convictions—and they are now in ICE custody awaiting removal hearings. KGNS News
- ➤ Residents in South Laredo were shaken by a high-speed chase on Patrick Henry Drive and Gilman Road—where a silver Chevrolet Impala crashed near Independence Hill Park—leading police to detain four individuals and seize drugs, a firearm, and ammunition in connection with a suspected human smuggling case. - ➤ After a string quartet held children’s concerts on Friday and a choir performed today to celebrate Laredo’s birthday, the Laredo Philharmonic will present its 'Tell Me a Story' concert this Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Martinez Fine Arts Theatre at Laredo College (West End Washington St.), featuring pieces like Astro Blue, nursery rhymes and selections from 1001 Arabian Nights. A brass quintet will continue youth outreach performances on Monday. KGNS News

- ➤ TAMIU held its Spring commencement on May 15 at Sames Auto Arena where its largest graduating class—948 candidates—crossed the stage. Morgan LaMantia, chairman of the STARS Scholarship Fund, served as the speaker as separate ceremonies honored undergraduate and graduate candidates. Texas A&M International University
- ➤ On Friday, Alexander High School's Bad 2 the Bone Smokers and Bark and Bone competed against over 100 teams from Texas in the state BBQ competition, earning first and fourth place respectively. Sponsor Griselda and team captain Enrique said intense practice sessions and careful recipe adjustments for meats and even desserts helped secure their success—offering insight for future events. - ➤ Volunteers are invited to help clean up Seven Flags Park today as part of a statewide Trash Free Gulf Program aimed at protecting local waterways. Check-in starts at 7:30 a.m. — the cleanup will run from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. KGNS News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Two Laredo second graders, Jose Vaquera and Axl Aguilar-Sanchez, raised nearly $6,000 and about $2,500—making them top fundraisers in South Texas—for the American Heart Association during National Stroke Awareness Month. Their local efforts brought a grant for Ruis Elementary to buy new PE equipment and show how community support can help improve heart health. KGNS News
