COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Laredo homeowner Mayra Garzon reported feral hogs damaged her new lawn in San Isidro, causing over $300 in losses as packs of 7 to 10 animals were seen entering yards at night. City officials discussed options including erecting fences—despite current HOA restrictions—while Councilmember Dr. Tyler King said a new ordinance and long-term wildlife management measures are being considered.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • A woman named Martha Irene Alderete was arrested Tuesday, May 20 for three counts of animal cruelty after Laredo police found three dogs in a small cage on La Parra Lane—one dog was dead and the others were thin and lacked water or shade.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Laredo Water Museum is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on the first Saturday of each month from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.—it offers free tours that teach visitors about water's importance and marks the end of a busy season of school field trips as summer break begins.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • 14-year-old Alejandro Martinez from Raul Perales Middle School qualified for the national spelling bee — he will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete starting May 27th.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City council approved the first phase of a waterline replacement project to fix Laredo’s aging system after months of discussion. The project will replace 30,000 feet of waterline on 15 priority streets starting within two weeks and is valued over $11 million—expected to improve service with only minor disruptions.  KGNS News
  • The City of Laredo was honored on May 20 for being an inclusive tourist destination — meeting accessibility criteria as 10 local spots, including the TAMIU Planetarium and San Agustin Plaza, proved user friendly for visitors with disabilities. Officials said they will add more accessible locations each year.  KGNS News
  • A group of South Texas mayors, including Laredo’s, sent a letter to federal leaders warning that tariffs may hurt trade with Mexico — the letter stated that such tariffs could raise production costs and risk job losses in key local industries.  KGNS News
