COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Laredo ISD held a ceremony on May 21 at Memorial Middle School — just days before Memorial Day — to honor fallen WWII heroes and servicemembers missing in action by unveiling a commemorative sign for six former St. Joseph’s Academy students. Several local groups, including Martin High School’s ROTC and Gold Star Mothers, participated in the tribute.  KGNS News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • TAMIU's A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business hosted CONCAMIN's first board meeting held outside México—an important step in cross-border business ties that brought top leaders from both sides together in Laredo. The session was part of a three-day agenda that included a welcome reception, working sessions, and a tour of the World Trade Bridge.  Texas A&M International University

CRIME NEWS

  • As Laredo faces rising heat, pet owner Edwing Ahmed Alvarez said he cools his dogs with water to help prevent infection. Recent animal cruelty cases have raised alarm as a dog was rescued in the Cheyanne subdivision and a woman was arrested on May 20 after police found two malnourished dogs without water (one dog was found dead in the heat).  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TAMIU employees work on a reduced schedule today during Enrichment Day from 8 a.m. — 5 p.m., with University offices open at limited capacity. They will have an early release at noon tomorrow — and offices will be closed Monday for Memorial Day until classes resume Tuesday.  Texas A&M International University
  • Twenty-three Laredo middle school students were named 8th Grader of the Year on May 21 after a year of hard work in a program run by local sponsors, KGNS, and the Laredo Police Department—Angel Pruneda from Salvador Garcia Middle School won first place.  KGNS News
  • Software engineering students from TAMIU presented digital solutions developed in partnership with the Laredo Public Health Department to improve data management, community resource access, and internal systems. Both the university and the public health department praised the collaboration—planning to assess how several student-designed systems will be integrated into the department’s digital infrastructure.  Texas A&M International University
  • Students from LBJ High School showed off a new hydroponic garden in the east wing courtyard yesterday—built by the robotics team using a 3D-printed pump and solar lights. The project gives students a hands-on way to mix nature with technology.  KGNS News
  • On May 21, family members, teachers and staff gathered at the Dr. Marcus Nelson Conference Center for Laredo ISD's third annual Bilingual Scholars of the Year event where students received awards and scholarships—Miguel Amante from Telemundo Laredo spoke about the importance of speaking more than one language.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT updated its five-year plan to expand U.S. 59 Loop into a six-mile freeway and said work along University Dr., Del Mar Blvd. and Shiloh Rd. is on track and within budget—the agency will close an access on Inspiration Pkwy in June and switch southbound traffic on May 27 for a few months while adding frontage roads and four overpasses at key intersections.  KGNS News
  • Workforce Solutions for South Texas is launching its Summer Paid Work Experience program for low-income teens aged 16-24 who qualify through government assistance such as TANF, SNAP, free lunches, CHIP & Medicaid; the six-week program offers a 30-hour work week and will accept 40 participants.  KGNS News
