COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Laredo veterans will honor fallen soldiers on Memorial Day at the City of Laredo Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. led by American Legion Post 59 and retired Army 1st Sgt. Ruben Buitron, the ceremony will include a motorcycle ride, flag ceremony, reading of names, and remarks by local leaders—guests are asked to be seated by 8:30 a.m.  KGNS News
  • The Haynes Recreation Center will offer Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation Summer Camps for children with special needs aged 10 to 13, featuring sports, arts, STEM, music and theater activities along with a light breakfast, lunch and a Friday Family Show Off Day—each camp serving 15 kids and providing a swim pass for a child and an adult. Registration will open Tuesday, May 27 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the center, and participants must be members, submit a birth certificate and pay a weekly fee of $60.  KGNS News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Laredo police said an SUV carrying four people crashed on Highway 83 near Market Street at 2:20 p.m. on May 21 — the 7-year-old boy, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car and later died while his mother and two siblings were taken to a hospital, and officials are reviewing footage to determine the cause.  KGNS News
  • On May 21, Laredo Police said an SUV lost control on U.S. 83 near Market Street, colliding with a cement wall and killing seven-year-old Arturo Dehoyos III, who was not restrained; the driver, a 27-year-old mother, and her two children (three and nine) remain in stable condition as investigators review surveillance.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A social studies teacher at Lamar Middle School was named the final Teacher of the Month on May 22 + Daniela Delgado, who has taught for two years, was honored for making history relatable and supporting her students, receiving a $250 gift card and other prizes+.  KGNS News
  • Congressman Henry Cuellar announced on May 22 that over $37 million in funding will go to Webb County school districts, with Laredo ISD receiving over $15 million, United ISD more than $20 million, and Webb Consolidated over $100,000—funds aimed at supporting teachers, reducing class sizes and improving early education programs. Final amounts will be announced this summer—formal grants will begin on July 1.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Laredo police chief Mike Rodriguez said his department is considering stopping high-speed chases in busy streets after more than seven chases occurred this week. He said new tools may help officers find suspects without risking public safety as other agencies take charge near the border.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Laredo Police reported a significant drop in fentanyl overdose deaths this year compared to last year—current numbers are down to four after a multi-agency task force improved Narcan access. The police aim to reach zero deaths by year-end, a stark improvement from over 30 fatalities last year.  KGNS News
  • The Laredo Fire Department reported 23 heat-related calls from April 1 to May 20—a drop from 44 calls last year—as summer nears and dangerous heat conditions are expected. Officials continue to monitor the situation to protect residents.  KGNS News
