- ➤ American Legion Post 59 held a Memorial Day ceremony on May 26 at the Laredo City Cemetery to honor local and Webb County service members who lost their lives in combat — Gold Star Mothers like Elizabeth Holguin Espinoza, Juana Maria Rodriguez, and Cecilia Arizola attended to remember their loved ones. - ➤ The City of Laredo will host a free splash party for students at Jovita Idar El Progreso Park, 5911 Thomas Avenue, on Thursday, May 29 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Families will enjoy games, music, food + water fun as summer begins. KGNS News
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Two Laredo brothers—Edgar and Cesar Ramirez—rescued a 19-year-old driver from a burning car after a head-on crash on Highway 359 on May 24; they pulled him out and kept him awake until paramedics arrived as the investigation continues. KGNS News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Memorial Day, veterans in Laredo and Webb County honored fallen soldiers as Laredo College held its first formal tribute at its historic Army fort—offering veteran programs and support for service members and their families. KGNS News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Laredo ISD will offer free breakfast, lunch + snacks to children aged 18 and under at over 50 locations including schools, pools, rec centers, churches, and libraries starting May 29 until July 18. KGNS News
- ➤ Laredo College dedicated a memorial bench in honor of Millicent Slaughter — one of the founders of the LC Education Foundation who served for 14 years — a year after she passed away at age 79. The bench, placed near the Fort McIntosh Private David Barkley Cantu Veterans Memorial Chapel, displays 'Always Forward' to celebrate her positive spirit. KGNS News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Laredo Police will host info sessions for those interested in joining the force on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1 at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 3 p.m. at headquarters on 4712 Maher Avenue — officials will explain how to apply, the physical test and the benefits of the job. KGNS News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A breast cancer survivor from Laredo, Maria Laura Nanez, is being honored today for leading Relay for Life and Laredo Wears Pink—events that raise over $100,000 each year to support cancer research and services provided by the American Cancer Society. For nine years, she has coordinated these events at the Student Activity Complex with schools, groups, and city workers. KGNS News
- ➤ The Laredo Public Health Department warned that whooping cough cases had risen sharply from last year+ it urged residents to get vaccinated to protect themselves. Officials stressed that the disease spreads easily+ it can be especially dangerous for babies, older adults, and those with weak immune systems. KGNS News
