EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 26, a 100-year-old Laredo resident received a long-awaited diploma from Martin High School after a 1946 health scare kept her from graduating — the milestone celebrated her lifelong love of learning.  KGNS News
  • Hannah Chavez, a Laredo seventh-grader from Elias Herrera Middle School, competed at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington (D.C.) after winning the regional contest with the word liverwurst; she did not advance past the first round and will try again next year.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas officials in Laredo are promoting a seat belt safety campaign that runs through the end of the month, using demonstrations and testimonies to stress the importance of buckling up and proper child restraints, with fines of up to $200 for violations and $250 + court costs for unbuckled children.  KGNS News
  • Webb County commissioners approved a 3.2-mile road improvement project in El Cenizo to fix potholes, cracks and flooded streets on Hernandez, Rodriguez, Morales, Valdez and Rosales streets. The county will seek contractor bids soon and review recommendations once the bids are submitted.  KGNS News
  • The City of Laredo distributed bottled water on Monday, May 25, for residents affected by the precautionary boil water notice for the Jefferson Water Treatment Plant area while noting stable water system operations. Distribution occurred at three locations (Sames Auto Arena, Bill Johnson Student Activity Center, and Veterans Field) until supplies lasted.  LaredoBuzz
