- ➤ Nena, a gentle basset hound cared for by the Laredo Animal Protective Society—featured on KGNS TV as Pet of the Week on May 28—was adopted on May 29 after she had been in care for two months following her owner's decision to give her up. KGNS News
- ➤ The City of Laredo held a free End of School Splash Party at Bartlett Pool on Thursday, May 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. featuring music, games, food, and pool fun for families—hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department—marking the end of the school year. KGNS News
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Laredo Police closed three eastbound lanes near the connector joining US Highway 83 and State Highway 359 to let crash investigators measure the scene of an accident (May 24) which killed 81-year-old Roberto Zavala when a Ford Mustang driven by 19-year-old Jose Alfredo Rodriguez-Covarrubias crossed the median and struck a Chevy pickup truck. - ➤ Two Brownfield residents pleaded guilty in March to smuggling undocumented migrants near Laredo — 20-year-old Mac Quese Howard remains in jail while 18-year-old De Richardson Miller was released on bond, with both facing up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $250,000. KGNS News
- ➤ Police had a heavy presence in South Laredo when officers arrived just before 8:30 p.m. on May 29 in the 2400 block of Diaz St+one witness reported large trailers and that some people may have been taken into custody. KGNS News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ After nearly a year of talks, a May 27 presentation showed the design for a veterans museum at a nearly 200-year-old home—donated by Juan Francisco Farias—and detailed plans for immersive tech exhibits. The project cost rose to $4.5 million and construction will begin once the city finalizes its agreement with Webb County—expected to finish within 12 months. KGNS News

- ➤ Two TAMIU International Business Administration doctoral students and three undergraduate Business students won cash prizes for Best Student Paper and Honorable Mention awards at the Western Hemispheric Trade Conference hosted by the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business; winners (including Ayman Samak who received $400) also earned free registration for the 2025 event (with other prizes ranging from $100 to $200). - ➤ United High School student Gabriel Eduardo Oliveros won a 2024 Kia Sportage for perfect school attendance—he was chosen at a drawing held at Sames Auto Arena before the United South High School graduation. He and 15 other students earned prizes from Drive Sames 4 Education, a program that rewards daily attendance. KGNS News
- ➤ TAMIU announced that it will begin a limited Summer Schedule on Monday, June 2 and continue through Friday, Aug. 8. The university’s office hours will be 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday—Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday. Texas A&M International University
- ➤ Texas A&M International University has received the 2024 Clients for Life Award by Schneider Electric for almost ten years of working together—since 2016 the partnership has improved campus energy efficiency through eight key projects that cut utility use by 33%, lowered costs, and reduced the carbon footprint.
