COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maggie is a friendly one-year-old red heeler mix featured as the Pet of the Week by Laredo Animal Care Services and has been at the shelter on Maher Avenue where adoptions are free and open Monday through Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.—The shelter will host a Dog Mud Run on June 21 with the first 50 sign-ups eligible.  KGNS News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Karnes County authorities said rain contributed to an accident on May 30 when a black Dodge Ram lost control on Hwy 181 and was hit by a northbound truck, killing 41-year-old Maria Lopez from Laredo—passengers in the other truck were treated and released.  KGNS News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Laredo BP Chief explained upcoming operational changes (aimed at improving service efficiency and safety) during a statement on June 4, saying the measures will be implemented soon to support local needs.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • Texas DPS warned of rising human smuggling cases using commercial vehicles—on June 2, officers discovered five undocumented immigrants hidden under a truck’s sleeper berth near Laredo and arrested an out-of-state driver from Florida.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gateway City Pride Association has planned a new-timed Pride Parade and Festival on Saturday, June 7, to beat the summer heat by starting festivities at 5 p.m. on Iturbide Street in downtown Laredo. The event will include trivia, games, and bingo (at House of Whiskey) along with a parade featuring decorated vehicles (with awards for best in show) that will end at Replay downtown bar.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LISD is asking local parents, students, and staff to share what they want in the new superintendent as Dr. Sylvia Rios retires in July. The district is working with TASB ESS — a nonprofit that guides superintendent searches — to gather survey responses and will name an interim superintendent next week to get ready for students' return on August 11 with the final hiring process starting by fall.  KGNS News
  • J.C. Martin Elementary School received three donated wheelchairs from the San Martin de Porres Catholic Church Knight of Columbus Council 9626 on Wednesday morning—this donation supports special needs students at extracurricular events like the Special Olympics and fills a critical gap for families who cannot afford repairs.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Greg Abbott must decide by June 22 on a bill that would ban all consumable THC products—an action that could dismantle a $5 billion cannabis industry and force 8,000 THC stores statewide, including those in Laredo, to remove their products and impose fines up to $500 starting September 1. Local business owners have until January 1 to adjust if the bill is approved.  KGNS News
