CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 23-year-old Laredo man pleaded guilty to smuggling undocumented immigrants after a police chase and was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release; he remains in custody pending transfer. KGNS News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Laredo College will hold a warehouse sale tomorrow from 8 a.m. to noon at the Carlos de Llano warehouse (Fort McIntosh campus), featuring furniture and items from the former home of ex-mayor J.C. Martin donated by the Fernando Salinas Trust. Buyers can pick up small items the same day while larger pieces will be available on Tuesday, June 24, and Thursday, June 26 as funds raised will help preserve the college’s historic campus. - ➤ On Monday, June 16, the Laredo City Council approved a $545,902 grant application for the Safe Routes to School program, which will help create safer biking and walking lanes near schools. - ➤ On Monday, June 16, Laredo City Council debated reducing the compliance grace period for paving industrial and commercial parking lots from 60 to 30 days and raising fines from $500 to $2,000 to improve safety, with Councilmember Vanessa Perez urging a daily fine, and they will review the plan further in August.
