  • The City of Laredo announced it will celebrate Make Music Day with music events for local residents—officials plan to share details on timing and locations soon.  KGNS News
  • City officials and Downtown Tirz announced plans to add color to downtown Laredo with public art & decorative installations. Officials said the project will update streets and public spaces to give the area a fresh look.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old man was arrested on June 18 and charged with reckless manslaughter for a May 24 crash on Highway 359—where his Ford Mustang crossed the median and hit 81-year-old Roberto Zavala’s Chevy pickup head-on—that led to Zavala dying days later in a San Antonio hospital.  KGNS News
  • Two men were sentenced for attempting to traffic firearms to a notorious cartel using counterfeit money for purchases in Zapata — one man received 41 months in federal prison and may face removal as a non-citizen while the other had a 57-month sentence with three years of supervised release pending.  KGNS News

  • The Mexican Consulate invites everyone today to view an art exhibition titled 'Este es mi Mexico' that features winning drawings from 14 children around the world, including two from Laredo—held on the second level of Outlet Shoppes at 1600 Water St. and running for the month.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials fenced off the historic Canseco House on Chihuahua Street after declaring it unsafe due to a long-unaddressed roof leak—causing serious damage to the second floor. Neighbors and volunteers urged the city to act by either restoring or removing the building—while the community garden stays open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.  KGNS News
  • The City of Laredo named Dr. Tareq Al-Zabet as its new Utilities Director on Friday, June 20. He brings over 20 years of experience in water management and will work to upgrade the water system to provide clean water to every resident.  KGNS News
  • An Allstate report based on collision data named Laredo one of the top five safest cities for driving, with Brownsville topping the list. Boise, Fort Collins, and Cary also ranked in the top five for safe driving.  KGNS News
  • A Texas House bill will take effect on July 1 to replace temporary paper license plates with metal ones to reduce fraud. The law allows exceptions (72-hour, 144-hour, transit and specialty permits) while tags issued before then remain valid until they expire.  KGNS News
