CRIME NEWS

  • Laredo Police continue trying to contact the family of 93-year-old Margarito Martinez after he was found disoriented on Monday, June 23 near the 1600 block of Bruni Street—Adult Protective Services have been notified.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Opera on the Border is held at San Agustin Cathedral in Laredo where doors open at 7:00 p.m. and rising stars from the Classical Music Institute’s Apprentice Artists Program will perform in a free event that celebrates music and unity (now in its fourth year).  KGNS News
  • The CBS Austin team visited downtown Laredo recently to film the Road Trippin’ segment that showcased the city’s history, art and local attractions. The episode promotes upcoming events that celebrate Laredo’s heritage + local dining and public art+ for visitors to enjoy.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Laredo College and TAMIU announced a new STEM program and scholarship to give local students hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and math. The schools plan to launch the program soon—details on application deadlines and course start dates will be shared later.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Webb County commissioners approved an agreement with CivicPlus to redesign the county website—used for tasks like paying water bills—with the project estimated to cost over $127,000 and details still being finalized for future changes.  KGNS News
  • Since 2008, the Laredo Sector Border Patrol’s Texas Hold’em initiative has canceled 1,053 commercial driver’s licenses, with 848 linked to human smuggling + 205 tied to narcotics smuggling + 141 processed in fiscal year 2025 with DPS as the agency reaches out weekly to freight forwarders, customs brokers and drivers to warn them of smuggling risks.  KGNS News
  • South Texas residents now have a new bus service that runs five trips Monday through Friday from the Zapata courthouse to downtown Laredo with a stop at the San Ygnacio Community Center—helping families and college students save on travel. Zapata County Judge Joe Rathmell said the route also connects to Rio Grande City and riders pay $2 for adults, $1 for veterans and seniors and free rides for children under seven, with the first 30 days free.  KGNS News
  • City officials in El Cenizo confirmed that the police department is inactive until it meets TCOLE standards—requirements such as 24/7 coverage and secure evidence storage—which they say will be addressed when meeting with state lawmakers to explore policy changes. The department will resume service once full compliance is reached.  KGNS News

  • In Laredo, SCAN has launched the Frontera Program to offer free mental health services for men during Men's Health Month—program coordinator Jacob Vasquez said the service supports men aged 18 and older dealing with anxiety, sadness, grief, or financial stress.  KGNS News
