The City of Laredo unveiled the Moises Jaimes Walking Trail at Independence Hills Park days before Independence Day to honor his memory and promote gun safety + responsible celebrations, following City Council action that renamed the trail to remind residents to celebrate safely.
🎓 Education
TAMIU’s first-generation graduate, Jared García-Lopez, will begin his Masters in Vocal Performance at the Manhattan School of Music in NYC this August after a recent performance at the Laredo Country Club impressed local audiences.
He is set to pursue a career in opera.
On July 9, TAMIU sent its first Global Pathways cohort to Rome to volunteer with Retake Italy & explore historic sites.
The 10 parenting students and foster scholars received scholarships that helped support their international experience.
Dr. Brittany Hood, a TAMIU assistant professor, was named a recipient of the Texas A and M University System Research Excellence Fund for her study on emerging adult mental health and criminal justice pathways.
The project is funded at $34,099 and examines treatment interventions for young men in border communities.
🏛️ Government
Laredo officials are studying flood risks along the Rio Grande amid federal border projects, according to a local report.
The study aims to guide planning to protect areas that may be vulnerable to flooding.
Webb County held a public meeting on July 9 at the Fred and Anita Bruni Community Center to gather Precinct 4 feedback for a recreation master plan from 2026 to 2036.
Residents can still share ideas by contacting the Commissioner's office, visiting the courthouse, or joining the October town hall.
