COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Duncan is a loving 1.5-year-old Basset Hound mix at Laredo Animal Care Services who was brought in as a stray and now looks for his forever home. He is neutered and vaccinated for rabies and can be visited at 5202 Maher Dr. — the shelter is open Monday to Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.  KGNS News
  • On Monday, July 14, the Webb County Commissioners' Court accepted a $30,000 grant from H-E-B to boost the Meals on Wheels program that provides hot meals to elderly and disabled residents in Laredo—concerns remain over federal budget cuts affecting similar services.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • The FBI is asking for help identifying any victims of former Laredo music teacher Carlos Jobany Castaneda Lechuga—accused of producing child pornography from 2015 to 2019 by targeting underage female students—as his trial will be held on October 7 in Arizona.  KGNS News
  • A Webb County employee was arrested on July 16 for allegedly committing aggravated sexual assault of a child — authorities are investigating the incident.  KGNS News
  • A South Carolina woman was found guilty of smuggling people near Laredo on July 16 — the court reached its verdict after hearing her case.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Justice Department is continuing a bribery case against U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar and will drop foreign agent charges under FARA as he faces allegations of taking $600,000 in bribes from a Mexican bank and an oil and gas company—Cuellar, who has represented Laredo and South Texas since 2005, denies any wrongdoing.  KGNS News
  • On July 8, a Vietnam War veteran told the VA Advisory Committee that some dentists are not taking VA vouchers—VA officials said not all dental providers take referrals from the Texas Valley Coastal Bend Healthcare System.  KGNS News
  • Rescue teams held a water rescue training exercise under Bridge 1 today to practice their skills and test safety equipment—officials said the drill prepares them for real emergencies. Local responders simulated rescues and safety checks to ensure quick action during future incidents.  KGNS News
