CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded on Thursday night at 1016 Cortez St to reports of a barricaded man allegedly firing shots in central Laredo, and the incident led to closures at Hendricks Ave + Cortez St while SWAT teams and negotiators handled the situation.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar visited TAMIU on Monday to speak with students, faculty, and staff during his campus tour. He said the meeting gave him a chance to learn about TAMIU’s programs and update faculty on the search for the next president — a process expected to complete in November.  Texas A&M International University
  • KGNS+ is holding a school supply drive to help Laredo students before the new school year begins. Donors can drop off items like notebooks, pens, and pencils at KGNS+ studios (222 Bob Bullock Loop), Tellez Law, and other local locations until July 30.  KGNS News
  • UISD said the Texas ACE program is no longer offered because changes in grant funding have removed its support+ the district is now evaluating alternative funding options to continue other student programs.  KGNS News
  • UISD announced today that due to funding cuts from the U.S. Department of Education as notified by the TEA it will not offer the Texas ACE after-school program in Laredo for the 2025-2026 school year—18 campuses will now run the After School Adventure Program at $150 per student monthly if at least 20 students enroll.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials met to discuss safety issues at the century-old Bender Hotel downtown — a building with a history of break-ins, fires and safety violations. The owners have boarded up windows and raised ladder steps to keep trespassers out — and the trust now is considering selling or donating the property to a nonprofit.  KGNS News
  • TxDOT launched its 'Be Safe, Drive Smart' campaign on July 17 to curb speeding by urging drivers to follow safe driving rules. The campaign will share tips and enforcement updates to help reduce dangerous driving—especially on Laredo roads.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gateway Community Health Center is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of Laredo to provide mobile back-to-school medical services for students from Pre-K to 12th grade, offering well-child visits, vaccinations, preventive care, and $25 sports physicals over the next few weeks (services accept Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and self-pay).  KGNS News
