CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Roberto Davila, 36, said he did not fire a weapon during a standoff on July 17 at his home on Cortez St. in Laredo—he was charged with discharging a firearm, resisting arrest, and other counts after police used tasers and force during his arrest. KGNS News
- ➤ CBP officers at the World Trade Bridge seized over $500,000 worth of alleged cocaine on July 19 — they found 15 packages weighing nearly 40 pounds and arrested the truck driver as Homeland Security Investigations began a criminal probe. KGNS News
- ➤ Victor Hugo Salas, a 26-year-old man, was arrested on July 18 in South Laredo after a joint operation by the Webb County Sheriff’s Office & the DEA seized 38 plastic baggies with 19.5 grams of cocaine, about $1,500 in cash, and 0.5 ounces of marijuana. KGNS News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Laredo celebrated its 21st International Sister Cities Festival at the Sames Auto Arena where thousands gathered over three days to enjoy cultural displays from Querétaro, Mexico and a Lele doll workshop with 107 registrants. The festival also featured its first Sister Cities 5K Run with nearly 400 participants—award winners were Alan Anderson and Prissy Garcia Salinas—and added a new community event to the celebration. - ➤ Councilmember Dr. Tyler King asked the City Council to add water issues to the agenda after residents reported changes in taste and smell since late May — he said the water is safe while the council will review the matter with the public. KGNS News
- ➤ Today, the City of Laredo opened the fourth phase of the Springfield Expansion Project, which gives North Laredo drivers a new route to Loop 20 via Springfield Ave. The project costs about $765,000 from the Regional Mobility Authority Fund and connects San Isidro Pkwy—Bob Bullock Loop while plans are underway to extend the route south to International Blvd before year’s end. - ➤ Laredo Animal Care Services wrapped up its second drive-thru vaccination and microchip clinic on July 12 at its facility on Maher Avenue, where 132 dogs and 56 cats received rabies, DAPP, Bordetella, FVRCP and microchip services for $30+ The event quickly reached capacity with preregistration and provided vital preventive care to local pets.
