- ➤ New Vision Community Church held its regular food drive on July 24 at Hamilton Senior Apartments in downtown Laredo—400 families received a week’s supply of groceries with help from Nourish Laredo and the Martin High School football team, continuing a program started in 2015. KGNS News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Laredo ISD police officer, Michael Landin, 54, was arrested Wednesday and is now out on bond as investigators probe the July 12 incident — he allegedly assaulted a man and discharged his firearm into the ground — and he has been placed on administrative leave. KGNS News
- ➤ A Louisiana man named Walter Wellington Somers, 41, was sentenced to five years in federal prison after more than 2,000 counterfeit fentanyl pills with the marking M30 were found at an Embassy Suites Hotel in Laredo—authorities said he planned to transport the drugs back to Louisiana for sale as part of an OCDETF investigation. - ➤ A Laredoan with a previous murder conviction pleaded guilty on July 9th to smuggling over 1,000 pounds of meth and was sentenced to 30 years in prison plus five years of supervised release that began on July 22nd; he remains in custody awaiting transfer to a federal facility. KGNS News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ In recent weeks, hundreds of Laredo residents reported strange odors in their tap water, and city officials tested about 250 samples to confirm it remains safe to drink—an odor caused by a natural algae compound intensified by high temperatures and low water flow. KGNS News
- ➤ City leaders will hold a special city council meeting Tuesday, July 29 to discuss the need for improved police officer retention. Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino said that raising salaries—needed to match high pay at competing agencies—and boosting border security investments are steps to keep experienced officers in the LPD. - ➤ A high school junior spent her summer break working on a project to improve Eagle Pass Rd.—the road has troubled first responders and border security officers after accidents and injuries from two border patrol rollovers. Webb County commissioners approved $354,700 on June 23 for a survey, and three civil engineers are now studying the road to address its aging culverts and unsafe crossings. KGNS News
