COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On July 31, more than 300 women gathered in Laredo for a forum to share experiences and build leadership—key speakers highlighted how they overcame personal and professional challenges. The event brought together teachers, business owners, health workers, and marketing professionals from across the city.  KGNS News
  • Jovita Idar Park will host a free Family Day Out today from 9 a.m. to noon at Bartlett and Thomas Avenue with fun activities for all ages and pets, including paddle boats, bikes, games, catch-and-release fishing, and live music.  KGNS News
  • On August 1, Laredo’s Parks and Recreation Department hosted a free adaptive basketball camp pairing high school players with children ages 8 to 17 with disabilities so they could practice dribbling, ball-handling, and shooting. City officials said the camp met varied needs—sparking plans to expand adaptive programming to include adults in future events.  KGNS News
  • A Laredo nonprofit announced plans for the Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center’s 'Grito, Gala y Giving' fundraiser, which will take place on September 18 at the Barn Reception Hall (4653 Casa Blanca Rd). Director Jackie Rodriguez said the event will raise funds to continue providing vital services to 3,000 local residents.  KGNS News

  • An SUV rolled over on I-35 near Laredo after its driver fell asleep at the wheel — DPS reported the accident and urged drivers to exercise caution.  KGNS News

  • CaminArte started Friday with art shows at Casa Daphne + Open Studio Night at the Pan American Courts Arts Complex, and it had an art sale that took apart a big wooden collage installation.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During a Webb County Commissioners Court meeting on July 28, officials saw a demonstration of new dry-erase ballistic shields called Invictus Shields—designed by Ricardo Mendez and Daniel Huerta to help protect against active shooter scenarios. The equipment will first be integrated at local high schools and county buildings as part of plans to enhance safety measures.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today at 8 a.m., North Central Park at 10202 International Boulevard hosts the annual Myke’s Purpose 5K Run and Health Fair to honor lives lost to drug overdoses and raise overdose awareness — an event sponsored by Myke’s Purpose and District 6 City Council member Dr. Tyler King with registration costing $25 in advance or $35 at the door. Participants will have access to community resources and support during the event.  KGNS News
