COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Laredo nonprofit and Walmart announced they will host a donation drive to help local families. Organizers said more details on the event’s time and location will be released soon.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • A man wanted for attempted murder was arrested on August 7 in connection with a suspected smuggling attempt—police say he was tracked and taken into custody after evidence linked him to the crime.  KGNS News
  • Texas Department of Public Safety recovered four stolen vehicles in Webb County between July 24 and August 6 — a 2021 Dodge Ram TRX from San Antonio, a 2020 Dodge Charger from Fort Worth, a 2018 Chevrolet Corvette and a 2021 GMC Denali from Houston, while its Criminal Investigations Division assists with the case.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas A&M International University launched its Fall Preview website on Aug. 7 to show campus improvements, course details and student resources for students and parents. Classes begin Aug. 25 and late registration runs through Aug. 29—tuition and fees have been frozen since 2021 due to state efforts to maintain affordability.  Texas A&M International University
  • TAMIU is welcoming students this fall and keeping tuition steady for a fifth year while adding new start times to help working students — registration is underway with classes beginning Monday, Aug. 25 and late registration open through Aug. 29.  Texas A&M International University
  • Texas A&M International University’s A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business formed its first Banking Academy Advisory Council to connect industry leaders with its new program; the council met in July + named Ignacio Urrabazo as its inaugural chair to help guide future initiatives in banking education.  Texas A&M International University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 4, the Laredo City Council discussed ideas to stop trains from blocking traffic but faced setbacks when a council member noted that some engineers are in Mexico (limiting the city’s control). Another council member said they will explore solutions, including building more overpasses (which may ease delays).  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Six doctors in Laredo were penalized by the Texas Medical Board for issues including improper prescriptions and inappropriate patient relations—three had their licenses revoked. Other actions included suspensions and practice restrictions for Dr. Mario Jack Vela, Dr. Jesus Ignacio Aguirre Burgos, and Dr. Maurice Andrew Click—local officials are working on incentives to attract more physicians.  KGNS News
  • Texas A&M International University is hosting SANE Boot Camp 3 'Beyond the Basics' from Aug. 20 to Aug. 22 in Laredo—this event will train registered nurses in hands-on forensic simulation, trauma-informed care, and courtroom readiness at the TAMIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Webb County Justice Center; certified and returning SANEs must register by Aug. 13.  Texas A&M International University
