- ➤ Laredo Animal Care Services is trying to find a forever home for Flor, a 1-year-old terrier mix featured on KGNS’s Pet of the Week who has received most of her vaccinations. The shelter will complete her rabies shot and sterilization for free as part of the Clear the Shelters event on Saturday, August 16 from noon to 4 p.m. at (5202 Maher Avenue). KGNS News

- ➤ Early Wednesday, August 13, a house fire in the 9700 block of Center Road led to the closure of Rancho Viejo Road as firefighters responded at 5:27 a.m.—the oven fire was contained but the house suffered smoke damage with no injuries reported. KGNS News

- ➤ A woman wanted by U.S. Marshals was extradited through the Laredo port of entry on August 13 — federal agents confirmed she is now in custody pending further investigation. KGNS News
- ➤ Laredo police arrested off-duty Border Patrol agent Oscar Garcia after he allegedly assaulted a family member, causing the victim difficulty breathing at the 2900 block of Norton Street on Tuesday before 11 a.m. KGNS News

- ➤ United ISD welcomed 40,000 students yesterday as the new school year began—district officials reported the enrollment as a strong start with plans to enhance academic programs. KGNS News

- ➤ The Laredo Drug and Alcohol Commission met on August 13 to review new strategies for substance abuse as members wore purple ribbons for Overdose Awareness Month and Police Assistant Chief Ricardo Gonzalez said that drones equipped with Narcan—currently two but soon to be six—will deliver faster aid to overdose cases that have led to 10 deaths among 75 reports this year.
