CRIME NEWS

  • A police officer shot an armed man in central Laredo yesterday—police say the suspect was carrying a weapon and an investigation is underway.  KGNS News
  • Authorities identified 43-year-old Jesus Lara Gonzalez as the man found dead Wednesday, August 13 in west Laredo at the 2300 block of Jefferson Street—investigators are still reviewing the cause of death.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On August 15, the Consulate General of Mexico and TAMIU's interim president signed a memorandum to fund the Institute of Mexicans Abroad’s IME-BECAS program—raising $27K in scholarship money for 14 students this fall.  KGNS News
  • On Friday, Aug. 15, the Consul General of México in Laredo and the TAMIU interim president signed an MOU at the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Colonnade—$27,000 in funds were raised from donors including GEMCO, the Mexican Cultural Institute and a $5,000 gift from Richer Agencia Aduanal, with TAMIU matching the contribution to support 14 scholarships that will be awarded to students for Fall 2025.  Texas A&M International University

  • A Laredo councilmember spoke on August 15 about a police salary agreement, saying the proposal supports competitive wages and better officer retention—more council discussion will follow.  KGNS News
