  • During Monday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño honored local figures including Harmony School of Innovation students who attended a STEM forum, inventor Manuel Christian Cardenas, the Mary Help of Christians School 5th Grade Boys’ Soccer Team for winning the championship, Castellano & Carpenter Dental Associates for over 30 years of service, the Laredo Fire Department for its role in the Kerrville flooding recovery, and the Laredo 7U All Stars for claiming the Pony South Zone Pinto-7 World Series Championship—showing strong dedication to Laredo’s community.  LaredoBuzz

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Texas A&M International University’s Small Business Development Center will offer an in-person QuickBooks Online course on Oct. 3 (9 a.m.–1 p.m.) to help small business owners learn to manage finances, record sales, and track expenses. The course costs $125 (covers software, computers, internet, and training materials) and requires prior registration due to limited seating.  Texas A&M International University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Laredo College will hold its summer graduation at Ft. McIntosh Campus with two ceremonies—one in the morning and one in the afternoon; doors open one hour early for visitor seating. Guests must follow the college's clear bag and restricted item policy while seating is first-come, first-served—ensuring event safety.  LaredoBuzz
  • TAMIU named Dr. Elda G. Ramirez as the new dean of its College of Nursing and Health Sciences—she is a Laredo native with a strong background that began at Mercy Hospital. She will start her role as students register and prepare for Fall classes beginning Aug. 25.  Texas A&M International University
  • One UISD student will earn a new Honda HR-V at the end of the school year through the Drive Sames 4 Education program — a partnership with Sames Auto Group that rewards high school students for perfect attendance. Every nine weeks, 16 students with perfect attendance are chosen as finalists to compete for the car.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After the Texas House approved a new congressional redistricting map that redefines District 28 to include Webb and Zapata counties and parts of other regions, lawmakers have spoken out about its impact. Senator Cruz supported the changes as good for Texas—while some local officials warned that the new boundaries may reduce minority influence and fairness in future elections.  KGNS News
  • On August 14th, Laredo’s Historic District Landmark Board approved repair plans for lots one, nine, and ten at 409 San Bernardo Ave—renovations will restore facades by reopening boarded windows and doors and rebuilding porches and walkways to preserve the structure’s historic value.  KGNS News
  • The City of Laredo warned residents that fake emails claiming to be from the Planning Department are circulating to trick people into making payments with false invoices—official payments are only accepted through the City’s Click2Gov portal or in person at authorized offices—and urged residents to check sender addresses and call the Planning and Zoning Department at 956-794-1613 if they suspect fraud.  LaredoBuzz

HEALTH NEWS

  • TAMIU received a $400K grant from the THECB Minority Health Grant Program to reduce mental health disparities among low-income adults in Laredo. The two-year project, led by TAMIU investigators and local health partners, will use data collection, outreach, and free screenings to build a sustainable care system—improving mental health services in the community.  Texas A&M International University
